At a recent meeting with the World Bank Vice President for Western and Central Africa at the Manhyia Palace, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, spoke fervently in favor of the Ashanti Region's development. On January 10, 2025, he emphasized the continuous setbacks in important projects for Kumasi, blaming them on Accra's administrative limitations.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II emphasized the necessity of managing the project headquarters in Kumasi rather than Accra. According to him, placing the coordinator and project unit in Kumasi would provide better collaboration amongst all parties involved, including district assemblies, which would enhance project performance.
"The reason for the delay is unknown, but the project office ought to be here.
It makes no sense to manage Kumasi projects from Accra. The project unit should be in Kumasi, and the coordinator should also reside here. Local stakeholders can effectively collaborate and keep an eye on the progress. He stated that these are significant issues that require our attention.
The Asantehene expressed his displeasure with the current system and made it clear that he does not want to depend on politicians to support the development of the region. He emphasized the necessity of a social compact with a focus on improving infrastructure in the real world. "If we have the infrastructure in place, everything else will work. Let's make a social agreement and see it through because I would prefer not to rely on politicians.
In response, the World Bank Vice President agreed on the need of localized project management to avoid bureaucratic hurdles and guarantee timely project completion in Kumasi after appreciating the worries expressed.
