In commemorating this professionalism month, the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) is reminding us of the need for uncompromising professionalism in the practice of Medical laboratory science. This is particularly needed, as the profession takes a pivotal role in disease diagnosis, treatment monitoring, and public health surveillance.
As quoted by the PRO of GAMLS, "Professionalism is the backbone of medical laboratory science. It is a must that we uphold the highest degree of professionalism, integrity, and competency in our duties." Dr. Amegatcher stressed that professionalism is not only morally required, but it is the law, as established in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) Code of Ethics, and the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act (Act 857).
GAMLS is dedicated to developing members' professionalism, adhering to standard procedures, using quality assurance practices, and ongoing development of their competencies through continuous professional development. Professionalism, the association holds, is vital in establishing public trust in laboratory services, collaboration among healthcare providers, and better patient outcomes.
As Dr. Amegacher has encapsulated it, "A professional approach to medical laboratory science is not a nicety but a necessity. It ensures that national and international standards are being met, thereby improving Ghana's healthcare system's credibility and eventually saving lives."
Finally, GAMLS appeals to all medical laboratory staff to recommit themselves to professionalism, ethical practice, and an uncompromising commitment to excellence in service to humanity. In doing this, they would not only be safeguarding the integrity of the profession but also serving Ghana's healthcare service system immensely.
