Greater Accra launches Regional Clean-up Campaigns

Greater Accra has already undertaken regional clean-up campaign drills with Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, urging market operators and members of the general public to also be part of the exercise. The exercise falls within the ambit of the programme adopted by government, aimed at stimulating environmental cleanliness as well as the enhancement of public health throughout the country. The exercise would be undertaken on a nationwide level by President Mahama at the soonest moment possible.

The monthly drills that are intended for cleaning are being undertaken at the same time in the whole region, and the minister invited all the stakeholders to take part in the monthly drills. The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Director, Lilian Baeka, emphasized involvement, noting that the defaulters will be informed. Let all of them be brought under the exercise. We will not rise from bed. Come and come over and sweep for you. All that will have to be brought," she threatened.

Addressing the women in the Madina market, the Minister promised them that the government was determined to set up a women's bank to cater to women under the same branch.

She also appealed to traders to run their businesses inside the market and not on the streets, saying, "Create a way for emergency service providers and do not overcrowd the place. Jospong Group of Companies Chief Corporate Communication, Sophia Kudjordji, also added that "sanitation is not an individual affair but a collective responsibility. We must all come together to make our environment clean and healthy.".

The exercise is a public endeavor that will need to be organized and conducted by traditional leaders, religious bodies, market associations, youth groups, and the private sector.
