Why President Mahama utilized his brother's private plane on his trip to Senegal and Gambia.

According to his acting spokesperson, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, President John Mahama's decision to utilize his brother Ibrahim Mahama's private jet for an important trip to Senegal and The Gambia was necessary due to a pending evaluation of the presidential aircraft.

Speaking on Saturday, January 18, 2025, Mr Ofosu Kwakye stated that the president is expecting a thorough report on the condition of the Communications Squadron, the Air Force unit in charge of handling the presidential fleet.

Until the study is completed, President Mahama has chosen for other arrangements that do not strain the public purse.

"The most critical point is that this alternative arrangement has not cost the Ghanaian taxpayer a dime," Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said on TV3. "President Mahama is mindful of the precarious economic situation and is committed to utilizing public funds prudently."

He noted that the president had access to the private plane, owned by businessman Ibrahim Mahama, even before his election and was utilized since it was convenient for the trip.

Mr Ofosu Kwakye promised the people that President Mahama will resume utilizing the official presidential plane when the Air Force's study was concluded.

Critics have questioned the usage of a private plane, but Mr Kwakye Ofosu downplayed their worries, stating that the jet is privately owned and has no financial ramifications for the state.

He emphasized that the decision is consistent with President Mahama's commitment to ensuring the optimal use of public resources, particularly during these time of economic problems.
