Minister for Communications and Digitalisation Sam George has said that the government would soon form a multi-stakeholder panel to propose a strategy for lowering Ghana's internet data rates.
In a post on X today, February 9, 2025, he indicated that the team, which would be "outdoored in the coming days," will comprise members from major government institutions, industry actors, and consumer organizations.
The objective, he says, is to achieve "common grounds that are representative of the needs of citizens, industry, and government."
The team will comprise officials from the Ministries of Communications, Digital Technology & Innovation, Energy, and Finance, as well as regulatory authorities including the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).
Other parties will participate, including the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), and the Association of Content Creators.
The announcement comes after the minister's recent comments during his vetting before Parliament's Appointments Committee.
Responding to inquiries, he promised Ghanaians that making internet services more cheap would be a top priority.
He stated that discussions will be made with telecom carriers to evaluate pricing structures and remove inefficiencies that contribute to high prices.
He also stated that the government will consider legislative measures, such as tax modifications, to relieve the financial burden on service providers and allow them to lower consumer rates.
"We will engage all stakeholders - the telcos, regulators, and consumers - to ensure that internet data is more affordable and accessible to every Ghanaian," he told reporters after the screening.
