MoMAG expresses concern over the widespread attacks and deaths of mobile money agents.

The Mobile Money Advocacy Group, Ghana (MoMAG) is shocked at the recurring attacks and murders of its agents across the country and has thus called on the government and the security agencies to protect their respective agents.

The Group said an agent was robbed at Kasoa in the Central Region at gunpoint with over Gh¢30,000 bolted away on January 27, 2025, at 7:40 pm, and a similar incident at Spintex HFC Estate in the Greater Region with a whopping sum of Gh¢45,000 stolen on 19th of February, 2025, between 8:30 and 9:00 pm. As a result, an agent was also robbed of an unspecified amount of money and murdered at Krofrom in the Ashanti Region on 13 January 2025, and another agent was shot dead at Nkrankwanta in the Bono Region on 19 January 2025.

MoMAG, on these grounds, has again called on the government to act swiftly to ensure safety and security for the mobile money agents because they are playing a key role towards the economic growth of the country. Addressing a press conference in Accra, MoMAG Operations Director Mr. Stephen Quarcoo Gorman gave evidence that some dozens of mobile money agents have lost their lives via armed robbery and urged the government to take practical measures towards their safety and security.

According to him, the Group has given jobs to over one million youngsters and generated a lot of income for the country in the form of taxes, work outside banking hours, and provide services such as insurance, retail banking, pensions, e-tickets, etc.

He instead directed agents to finish work by 6:00 p.m. every day and desist from carrying out financial transactions in the open space and also desist from carrying huge amounts of money. "Lock your doors when you're dealing with money and customers, and don't resist robbers, but safety first, and report to the Police Service hotlines and install CCTV cameras strategically to capture robbers," he urged. Mobile Money Advocacy Group, Ghana (MOMAG) is an association that promotes the well-being of mobile money agents in the nation with the general aim of bringing the mobile money agents under one umbrella to discuss their well-being as well as have a voice to negotiate on issues in the business.
