Minister Moves to Reduce Mobile Data Costs: Inter-Ministerial Committee to Address High Charges.

Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communications, has announced intentions to convene an inter-ministerial group to investigate and fix Ghana's high data costs.

Speaking to Joy News in Accra, the Ningo-Prampram MP stated that he had already directed the Communications Ministry to begin the process, with the committee set to be constituted within the next 14 days.

"I met with the director and management of the ministry yesterday and gave them the operating order. Hopefully, within the next 14 days, we'll be forming an inter-ministerial group to investigate the cost of data," he said.

Sam George expressed optimism that Ghanaians will witness meaningful changes in data costs before the end of the year.

"At my vetting, I said that it is my fervent belief that before the end of this year, we should see some movements in the data offerings," according to him.

Sam George emphasized that his policy recommendations will be informed by comprehensive consultation with important stakeholders, including telecom operators and industry regulators.

"Even before I sat down to declare this as policy, I had consulted with all of the telecom CEOs. I plan to be a minister who will engage industry. "I will not announce a policy without first engaging the industry and obtaining their approval," he stated.

He also defined his leadership style as a "reset" for Ghana's digital economy, promising that policy choices would be made in consultation with industry stakeholders.

"I informed them that there is a new dawn. It's a fresh start. And so I personally interacted with every single chief executive and the chamber to obtain their understanding of what I wanted to accomplish and get their support before announcing it," he said.
