Former Council of State member, Sam Okudzeto, has backed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, as tensions escalate within the Ghana Police Service.
Dissatisfied with Dr. Dampare's leadership, several officers have accused him of limiting police commanders' ability to talk to the media and giving unjust promotions. Some have called for his removal as a result of these worries.
However, Mr. Okudzeto vehemently disagreed with these calls in an interview on 3FM's AGENDA. He characterized Dr. Dampare as a competent, disciplined leader who is committed to doing the right thing.
"What they're whining about is beyond my comprehension. Dr. Dampare is among the most stoic and disciplined commanders we have ever had, in my experience as a leader in this nation," he remarked.
A complaint filed by forty police officers who said they were wrongfully denied promotions was rejected by a Kumasi High Court earlier this year. Some officers are nonetheless dissatisfied with the IGP's leadership in spite of this.
According to Mr. Okudzeto, there would be no need to alter the IGP unless there was a compelling cause. "We cannot run a country that way—it makes no sense," he said, cautioning against the notion that important individuals must be replaced with each new government.
