The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin of using a dictatorial style to frighten the minority caucus in the House.According to the party, the suspension of three Members of Parliament (MPs) following last week's pandemonium during the vetting processes is inappropriate and undermines their capacity to hold the government responsible.
"The party views the Speaker's selective and autocratic posture as dangerous, with these actions packaged to cow the minority into submission, thus weakening its ability to hold the government accountable," the party declared in a news statement published on Monday, February 3rd.
The party chose to respond publicly to the suspension of four MPs—three from the NPP and one from the NDC—following a press conference held by the minority caucus in Parliament on Monday, February 3.
Furthermore, some NPP MPs have expressed concerns regarding their safety and have indicated plans to enhance their security measures.
Former Majority Leader Osei Kye-Mensah-Bonsu has raised objections to the Speaker's decision to suspend the MPs, suggesting that Mr. Bagbin may not have fully adhered to constitutional guidelines and established parliamentary procedures in this matter.
