Pope Francis Extends Well-Wishes to President-Elect Trump Despite Past Tensions

In a historic address before the presidential inauguration in Washington, Pope Francis sent good wishes to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. Contrary to previous disagreements, particularly over Trump's anti-immigrant rhetoric, the pope had hope that Trump's administration would build an equitable and inclusive society.

Pope Francis, who has led the 1.4 billion members of the Catholic Church since 2013, bestowed Trump with "wisdom, strength, and protection" as he takes office again. "It is my hope that under your leadership the American people will prosper and always strive to build a more just society, where there is no room for hatred, discrimination, or exclusion," his letter states.

The pope's statement comes one day after strong denunciation of Trump's reported proposal to strengthen immigration enforcement across the United States, calling it a "disgrace" in an Italian television interview. He went further to say that the action will disproportionately impact migrants, who are already suffering.

Trump administration officials stated on Saturday that the president-elect was reconsidering immigration raids in Chicago after news of the coming activities spread in rumors. This comes after Trump's immigration policy has continued to be criticized.

In the 2016 presidential election, Pope Francis openly criticized Trump, asserting that his immigration policy was "not Christian." Despite their differences, the pope's latest speech calls for peace and justice in American society under Trump's renewed leadership.
