Kenya Police Use Tear Gas to Disperse Protest Over Alleged State Abductions

Kenyan authorities deployed tear gas on demonstrators who were protesting alleged government officials' role in kidnappings. In an attempt to raise awareness on rising enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings that allegedly involved state organs, human rights activists and civil society had staged the event.

To express their outrage, hundreds of individuals gathered in Nairobi to organize the protest. Protesters shouted slogans against human rights violations as they carried placards demanding justice and accountability.

There was chaos on the streets because police officers dispersed the crowd using tear gas when tempers became heated. Several protesters were injured during the confrontation, while others were arrested.

The cases of enforced disappearances are increasing, human rights activists claim, and the victims are either politics or in the interest of counter-terror. For establishing its allegiance towards the promotion of the rule of law and human rights, the administration has denied the claims.

The event puts the event under the limelight, particularly in view of growing distrust among Kenyans over the accountability of their government and because of demands for transparency.
