Bagbin has no authority to suspend MPs – Kyei-Mensa-Bonsu

Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has raised concerns regarding the motives behind the suspension of four members of Parliament made by the Speaker Alban Bagabin. This decision was reached during a session marred by angry and loud debates at the vetting process on Thursday, January 30, 2025. The meeting was characterized by high emotions which led to banter that ended the proceedings. Kyei Mensah Bonsu’s appeal raises concerns regarding the validity of these suspensions within what he refers to as an emotionally compromised context.

Kyei Mensah Bonsu argued that such orders should not have been given by the Speaker on the basis of the Standing Orders and the Constitution, which does not give him this power.

Kyei Mensah Bonsu expressed his support for the Speaker's decision on the suspension of the members during an interview with Joy News on Saturday, “The Speaker is justified in referencing the essential provisions of Order 342 outlined in the recently adopted Standing Orders. He noted the importance of these rules in ensuring order during legislative business."

However, his concern was limited to the power of the Speaker, stating, “Now the question is, where does the Speaker get his or her power? There should be no need to educated order standing the constitution Ensuring common sense.”

statement: The Constitution does not authorize the Speaker to issue those orders.

Kyei Mensah Bonsu went on to argue that the acts of the Speaker by him overleveraging his position which he claims was wrong.

The Speaker within a doubt, has reached a decision but has not only done so in a legislative manner that exceeds his ears.

He stated, “Likewise, his attitude and behavior raise the question.”
