Opposition Leader in Venezuela Arrested and Released Following Protest

The Venezuelan protest rally recently reached its peak when one of its members was arrested when an opposition leader was arrested. He was later released. That the arrest was such a big news item is a testament to the political instability in the country, as the people continue to express their anger against the present regime.

In a show of peaceful protest to compel the government to enact reforms and relief from economic woes, the head of the opposition party—whose name is not yet publicized—was apprehended. The rally went in with a grand boom, and the protesters called for the outgoing government to be open and responsible.

The arrest was condemned immediately by the foreign observers and various human rights organizations, who perceived the detention as an effort to muzzle opposition. There was some social media backing for the leader of the opposition, as many drew attention to the need to preserve democratic freedoms along with freedom of assembly.

After a brief detention, the opposition leader was let go amidst general public outcry and international as well as local pressure. Public announcement is yet to be made on the 'status of their release or being charged' against them. The leader has since then issued demands for further nonviolent demonstrations and for talks to meet the country's pressing needs.
The unstable political environment in Venezuela, where relations between government and opposition parties have been piling up, is the subject of this event. The arrest and subsequent release of the opposition leader could impact future political party negotiations and could be a catalyst for future rallies.

The political upheaval in Venezuela has again taken centre stage following the arrest and release of an opposition activist during demonstrations. In trying to come up with a solution to the crisis which is sensitive to democratic values and human rights, the world will be keenly watching the situation as it develops.
