Thousands of Canadians petition to cancel Elon Musk’s citizenship.

Canadian citizenship of Elon Musk has been sought by thousands of Canadians. Five days old, the petition blames Musk for committing acts not beneficial to Canada's interests and participating actively in Canadian politics. Having more than 250,000 signatures already, the petition blames Musk for using his finances to impact Canadian elections and as a member of a foreign state against Canadian sovereignty.

Musk is Canadian because of his mother's birth in Saskatchewan, although he was born in South Africa. The billionaire responded to the petition on Twitter, writing, "Canada is not a real country," before deleting it. The petition is tokenistic and serves no practical purpose at all. But if it accumulates 500 signatures and is supported by an MP, then the government will generally respond.

The petition was started by a British Columbia writer and is being sponsored by New Democratic MP Charlie Angus. Angus said he will not be seeking re-election. Musk is an American and Canadian citizen. Musk moved to Canada at age 18, studied at Queen's University in Ontario, then moved to the United States.

He has endorsed some of Donald Trump's policies, such as hard-line immigration enforcement, and is presently accused of doing illicit work in America on a student visa. Musk made a joke about the allegation and naturalized as an American in 2002.
